The Crisis of Zionism by Peter Beinart

Beinart is an American Jew who has taken alot of grief from many of his fellow Jews for writing “The Crisis of Zionism.”   He’s been called “naive and Manichean.”

Beinart blogs about Israel at and is an associate professor of journalism and political science at CUNY.

The basic premise of the book is that Israel’s very existence is threatened by the intransigence of Israeli leaders who support the unrelenting settlement construction in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.   I suppose any criticism of Israeli policies is automatically a no-no  in some circles, regardless of the merits.

The author wants Israel to succeed and flourish.  He wants the Zionist dreams of his grandmother and other relatives to be fulfilled.  That’s why he has written the book – to convince American Jews that they must engage now and help Israel live up to its potential, or Israel may not survive at all.

“… unless American Jews help end the occupation that desecrates Israel’s founding ideals, this is what Zionism will become, a movement that fails the test of Jewish power.”

I am not Jewish, but I want the same future for Israel that Beinart describes.   I hope enough American Jews agree.

The book can be ordered here or, better yet, purchased at your local, independent bookstore.
